Techniques and Application
Medium Modification
Galkyd, made by Gamblin, is an alkyd resin blended with Gamsol and was added to the oil paint to decrease the drying time. Several proportions of Galkyd to paint were tested to determine the optimal mixture that would both decrease the drying time, but also not thin the oils so much that surface texture could not be produced. A mixture of 10 parts oil paint to 1 part Galkyd, by weight, was found to adequately decrease the drying time of the oils while leaving the paint thick enough to achieve texture.
Overcoat
One set samples was left unvarnished. Artists typically varnish their finished paintings, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to protect the paint layer from harmful environmental factors such as dirt and UV light. Although it is common to varnish, there are instances when paintings are left unvarnished so it was necessary to have a set of samples that represent this choice by the artist. It was also advantageous to have a unvarnished set of samples for comparison to the varnished ones.
